Top 20 Terms to Know

Bottom
noun

[bát-əm] A bottom refers to a person receiving the action of

another (a Top). A person that desires to surrender control to

another person as part of a power exchange relationship.

The bottom received an open hand spanking from the Top.

Consent
verb

[kən sɛ́nt] The mutual agreement between a Top and bottom of what is to take place during a scene, interaction or within a relationship. This is a cornerstone concept in the BDSM community.

The bottom has consented to be tied with rope and flogged during the scene.

 

Dominant / Domme
noun

[dám-ə-nənt / dom-me] A person who exercises control over another, the control can be mental or physical.

Dominant usually refers to a male and Domme to a woman.  Dominate is often abbreviated as Dom.

The Dominant made the submissive stand in the corner as punishment for breaking a rule.

 

Dragon’s Tail
noun

[drǽ-gən tél] A whip consisting of a handle and a strip of leather or vinyl. The leather is rolled into a spiral with a finely tapered tip on the end that leaves a sting, much like a whip.

The Master is very proficient in wielding a dragon’s tail.

 

Dungeon
noun

[də́n-ǰən] A club that includes standard BDSM equipment such as spanking benches, a St. Andrews cross, and rigging equipment. 

John is meeting his submissive at the local dungeon tonight for a whip scene.

 

Flogger
noun

[flág ger] An impact toy consisting of a handle attached to strips of leather. Flogging usually involves swinging a it at a person so the strips inflict pain and mark the skin. Softer flogging can be sensual. Sometimes, two floggers are used, swinging in a figure 8 pattern which is called Florentine flogging.

The Dominant anchored the submissive to the wall and used a flogger on his back.

 

Hard Limit
noun

An activity or concept that a person will not consent to or engage in.

I do not consent to wearing a ball gag.  It is a hard limit, said the submissive.

 

Impact play
noun

Play that involves the infliction of pain. It can involve actions such as flogging, whipping, or hand spanking.

Leather Community

A social group style within the BDSM community who generally observe and practice very structured and formal protocols with a distinct and structured hierarchy of leadership.   The term refers to the historical movement that was a precursor to the modern BDSM community.  The Leather Community is an early form of BDSM families and social groups.

A meal, usually at a restaurant, where like-minded individuals gather to socialize and/or attend a presentation.

Jane attended a Munch and made several new friends.

 

Rigger

noun  

The person who ties others with rope usually associated with the act of suspending a person off the ground using rope .

The rigger anchored the bottom’s arms behind his back.

 

Risk-Aware Consensual Kink (RACK)

A concept used in the BDSM community to signal personal awareness and consent to activities you acknowledge could be harmful or dangerous.  The acronym “RACK” is often used in place of the full phrase.

Before beginning the rope tying class, the instructor asked for everyone to acknowledge their understanding and acceptance RACK.

 

Scene
noun

A period of time during which two or more individuals are engaging in BDSM or other types of activities.

During their scene, the Top blindfolded the bottom and anchored his hands in cuffs.

 

Spanking Bench
noun

An apparatus that facilitates bending over to receive a spanking, usually a piece of furniture shaped like a sawhorse or an ottoman that includes some form of padding and may have anchor points.

 The bottom lay over the spanking bench while receiving a hand spanking from the Top.

 

St. Andrew’s Cross
noun

An apparatus composed of two planks of wood nailed together in the form of an X, usually about 7’ tall

Upside Down

[əp sayd dawn] A term often used to describe when a scene goes terribly bad either as a result of one of the parties ignoring agreed consent, or because the emotional or physical intensity of the scene is overwhelming in a negative way.

Twenty minutes into the scene the bottom became overly emotional and the Top stopped the scene because the Top felt the bottom had gone upside down.
